The Do’s & Don’ts of Braces

Bracing for Reality

You’ve heard the news. You need braces. While braces are a helpful and sometimes necessary intervention for teeth, there are important things you should remember. Your treatment will probably last about 24 months. This is a long time, so be sure to talk to your dentist and orthodontist along the way if you ever have any questions.

Below are a few important “Do’s and Don’ts”

Brush and Floss Frequently, and Rinse Often

Whenever possible, brush immediately after eating. This prevents tiny food particles from getting lodged between the teeth and braces. With braces, a softer toothbrush or electric one tends to work better.  Floss one or more times daily, preferably with waxed floss.  If you must skip brushing after a snack or meal, at the very least be sure to rinse with water or mouthwash. Failure to brush and floss will lead to plaque.  We have many helpful hints here for you to remember.

Avoid Certain Foods

You must choose your meals and snacks more carefully while wearing braces. Sticky, chewy, and hard candies and foods may cause damage or make you feel pain. Never chew on ice, and stay away from sugary and starchy foods that promote plaque. Here are some foods to avoid

Stay on Track and Stay Safe

Keep in touch with your orthodontist. Go to appointments. Make sure you get any necessary adjustments as soon as you can.  Also, as much as possible, refrain from sports and activities that might lead to excessive contact unless you have a properly fitted mouthguard.

Other Things to Know

Refrain from biting your lip or letting your tongue glide excessively along your braces. The most important thing to know is to get in touch with us if you ever need to visit
