Tips & Tricks on Braces Care

Braces are the right choice for adults and adolescents who want straighter teeth, a good bite, and a healthy smile.

Wearing braces is not always easy, but following these tips and tricks on braces care will help make the task easier and less stressful.

Learning to brush and floss your teeth while wearing bracing isn’t complicated.

First, you need to use a soft-bristle brush or a bi-level brush (short bristles in the middle and higher bristles around the edges). Use fluoride toothpaste. Brush after every meal, if possible. Use a water pick or a tiny tool called an interdental toothbrush to clean hard-to-reach areas. Learn to use a dental floss threader so you can floss daily.

If your family members love to play sports, it’s important to protect their teeth and their braces with mouthguards for both upper and lower teeth.

Custom-made mouthguards offer the best fit. If you have hooks, be sure to wear your rubber bands at all times. Rubber bands can hurt at times. Wearing the bands prevents your hooks from digging into your cheeks. Your bands are part of the treatment and help your teeth move more quickly.

There are lots of tips to minimize damaging your braces.

Avoid sticky foods and hard foods that get caught between your wires or that can break the wires.

Try to break bad habits like biting their fingernails and chewing on pencils or pens to avoid damaging their braces.

If a wire breaks, don’t try to fix it yourself. Call the office immediately to schedule a repair. Cover the sharp wire with a little cotton or wax to protect your gums.
