Many orthodontic emergencies are not quite emergencies, even though they can be uncomfortable and unpleasant for the patient. Knowing what to do in the event of an orthodontic problem can help you have a better experience with your orthodontic appliance. Here’s what you need to know.
Traditional braces are held together with wires that stretch from one tooth to another. Occasionally, protruding wires can cause the skin inside the mouth to become irritated and uncomfortable. The best way to deal with a protruding wire is to use clean, sterile tweezers to bend the wire back against the tooth. Place relief wax on the wire to reduce irritation.
This is only a temporary fix. To fully fix the problem, make an appointment with the orthodontist for a repair.
If the wire cannot be bent to lay flat against the tooth, and if the situation is too uncomfortable to withstand before the appointment with the orthodontist, clip the wire. Place gauze around the wire to catch it when it falls.
Sometimes the brackets, the metal parts stuck to the teeth, come loose. If this happens, make an appointment with your orthodontist as soon as possible. Most likely, the bracket will still be stuck to the wire and can be moved with tweezers. Use sterile tweezers to move the bracket back to its original position in the middle of the tooth. This will alleviate discomfort while waiting to see the orthodontist.
Mouth sores are a natural problem that many people experience, and when they have braces, this can make sores even worse. Use antiseptic gel to the surface of the sore, and use relief wax on the nearby teeth to protect the sore and reduce discomfort. Read the antiseptic gel instructions before applying it in the mouth.
