Wearing Retainers after Braces

You’ve spent a lot of time and money to improve your smile, so it only makes sense to do what you can to keep it that way. The last phase of the process is wearing a retainer. While it might seem a little inconvenient at first, it is an essential step in ensuring your teeth stay in the right position permanently.

If you aren’t sure what this involves, our team at Perfect Smiles Orthodontics has you covered. Here’s what you need to know about wearing retainers after braces and why it is so important for the longevity of your beautiful smile.

Why Are Retainers Important?

If you’ve already had any type of orthodontia, you already know that your teeth can move around at any time. While your teeth are in the ideal position, the ligaments and bone in your mouth need additional time to tighten. Wearing retainers after braces helps keep everything in place after the braces are removed.

You’ll start by using a retainer at all times for the first few months and then drop down to just at night upon the guidance of your orthodontist. Failure to wear your retainer can cause your teeth to shift back to where they once were, undoing all of that time and effort you’ve previously undergone.

Types of Retainers

There are different types of retainers that your orthodontist might prescribe. Knowing the different options is an important part of wearing retainers after braces.

Clear plastic removable retainers are designed to fit your mouth comfortably and are almost undetectable. You remove them when eating or drinking, but wear them during the rest of the day and at night.

Another option is Hawley retainers. These are made from metal and acrylic shaped to custom fit your mouth. They are also removable for different parts of the day, but a little more detectable with the eye.

Permanent bonded retainers are a little different. They’re glued to the backside of your teeth and do not come out. Depending on your situation, you might wear this type of retainer for years or even decades.
