Braces have advanced over the years to provide you with many options for teeth straightening through traditional metal braces, lingual braces, ceramic braces, Invisalign, and more. These choices weren’t available in years past, and each option got perfected to give you quick and efficient teeth straightening. Find out why each part of braces is necessary and what role they play.

Parts of Braces & What They Do?

Parts of Braces

Traditional metal braces have been around for decades & patients still offer these braces because they work so well. Metal braces are the most popular orthodontic option because they work to straighten your teeth the fastest and are a cost-effective option for teeth straightening. Metal braces are made from stainless steel but can be used in combination with titanium. The metal we use is sturdy.

There are three main parts of braces: the brackets, the wire, and the ligature elastics that go about the brackets:

  • Brackets – These are the little metal pieces that are connected to each tooth center using dental glue. This glue guarantees that the brackets attach to your teeth. The adhesive is gentle enough that it can be removed once your orthodontic treatment with braces is over. Brackets are made of stainless steel but also can be made white or tooth-colored. When they become tooth-colored, they are called ceramic braces. These metal brackets hold the wire over the teeth.
  • Wire – This wire is known as the “archwire.” It is the metal wire that combines all of the brackets in your mouth. You will have one archwire along the upper teeth and one along the lower teeth. This wire curves around the teeth and puts pressure on them so they come into the correct alignment in the mouth. The primary player functions to move your teeth in the proper direction.
  • Elastics – They are nothing but rubber bands attached to the archwire of the brackets on every tooth. Without these ligature elastics, the archwire would not be substantial and couldn’t do its work. You can also ask your orthodontist for colorful elastics if you do not want a boring look.
