Hygiene Tips & Tricks for Braces Wearers

Hygiene Tips & Tricks for Braces Wearers

Oral health is very crucial for braces wearers. Proper dental care may take a lot of effort, but it is worth it in the long run. The following key practices should be observed faithfully.

Proper Brushing

Braces due to the wires and brackets trap food leading to the formation of plaque.  If not properly handled it may develop into gum disease, bad breath, cavities and tooth decay. Therefore, one should brush their teeth at least twice a day for a full two minutes. The goal is to ensure the teeth and braces are clean and shiny. If possible, one should brush after every meal or gargle water well then spit the water to remove any trapped food particles.

You can also use soft bristles or power toothbrush. Set the power toothbrush at a low power level, and the back of the brush should not hit the braces. One should brush gently and thoroughly especially the chewing surfaces, sides, backs, tongue and mouth roof. The toothbrush should be replaced every three months or sooner. Fluoride toothpaste is ideal for better results.

Flossing

Flossing is another healthy habit ones should adhere to. It should be done in between the teeth at least once in a day. For the dental floss to reach under the arch wires quickly, you can use a floss threader. Avoid foods with high sugar content as well as hard and sticky foods since they tend to remain in between the brackets and wires. Bent, broken or loose wires or brackets should be checked regularly for immediate repair.

Lastly, it is crucial for one to check-in with your orthodontist frequently and your dentist every six months or more often. Never hesitate to contact us with any questions or problems.
