Have you recently found out you need braces? You’re probably wondering what type of braces are best for you.
There are three types of braces: Metal, Ceramic or Clear Orthodontic Aligners (removable), also known as Invisalign. Depending on your needs and budget, one may be better for you than the other type of braces.
Traditional Metal Braces
With these braces, metal bands wrap around molars in the back of the mouth and metal brackets are glued to the front of the teeth. A thin wire goes through the brackets and guides the teeth into the right place. Since metal braces work well and are less expensive, children usually get this type of braces. Unlike braces in the past, current braces are lighter, smaller and more comfortable.
Ceramic Braces
If you’re concerned about how metal braces might look, a new option is clear ceramic braces. They’re similar to traditional braces, but the brackets in the front of the teeth are made of a clear ceramic that’s hard to see. However, they’re less durable and cost more than metal braces.
Clear and Removable Aligners (Invisalign)
This is a clear, plastic aligner that looks like a mouth guard, so you can remove it when you eat food or clean your teeth. Every two weeks, you get a new aligner that gradually adjusts your teeth. Clear aligners are also used by some people after finishing orthodontic treatment to make sure your teeth stay in the right place.
